Why Your Aircon Is Not Cold and When to Call for Service

An aircon that runs but does not cool properly can make any room feel uncomfortable fast. Whether you are at home, in an office or managing an industrial site, weak airflow and warm air can make it hard to work, rest or keep a space comfortable. During humid September days in Singapore, aircon systems often run for long hours, so small faults can become much more obvious.

Poor Airflow and Dirty Components
A clogged air filter is one of the simplest and most common reasons for weak cooling. Filters collect dust, lint and airborne particles over time. When airflow is restricted, the indoor unit cannot move enough cool air into the room. You may notice a musty smell, visible dirt on the filter, weak airflow or a room that takes far longer than usual to cool.
Before assuming there is a major fault, we recommend checking the basic operating condition of the unit. Switch it off first, then follow the manufacturer’s guidance for removing any accessible washable filters. Rinse them carefully and allow them to dry fully before putting them back. In Singapore’s humid conditions, filters in frequently used units can become dirty quickly.
Dirt can also build up on parts you cannot safely reach. The evaporator coil in the indoor unit absorbs heat from the room, while the condenser coil in the outdoor unit releases that heat outside. When either coil is coated in grime, heat transfer becomes less effective. The system may run longer, use more electricity and still leave the room feeling warm.
Signs that deeper cleaning may be needed include:
Water dripping from the indoor unit
Warm air despite the fan running
Reduced airflow after filter cleaning
Frosting on the coil or copper piping
Persistent odours from the aircon

Refrigerant and Compressor Problems
Low refrigerant, often called low aircon gas, is another reason an aircon may run without producing enough cold air. Refrigerant circulates inside a sealed system, so it should not simply run out through normal use. If the level is low, there may be a leak in the piping, connections or one of the indoor or outdoor units.
You may notice air that feels only slightly cool, a system that runs for very long periods, hissing sounds or frosting on the copper pipes. A gas top-up may seem like a quick answer, but it may only provide short-term relief if the leak remains. Proper air conditioning repair should include checking for leaks, repairing the affected area where possible, testing the system and charging it with the correct amount of refrigerant.
The compressor is another major part to consider. It circulates refrigerant through the system, and without it, the aircon cannot remove heat effectively. Age, overheating, electrical damage and prolonged operation with low refrigerant can all place strain on the compressor.
Stop using the unit and arrange professional attention if you notice loud knocking sounds, a burning smell, repeated tripping or unusual outdoor-unit operation. Repeatedly switching the aircon on and off will not force it to cool and may place more stress on already damaged components.
Settings, Electrical Faults and Installation Issues
Sometimes the solution starts with a quick settings check. Make sure the unit is set to Cool mode, not Fan, Dry or Auto mode. Set the chosen temperature below the current room temperature, check that the remote-control batteries are working and make sure a timer has not been activated. Dry mode can reduce moisture in the air, but it may not give the stronger cooling you expect from Cool mode.
If the settings are correct but the cooling is inconsistent, the thermostat, temperature sensor or control board may be at fault. These parts tell the system when to start and stop cooling. A fault can cause the aircon to cycle too often, stop before the room is cool or respond poorly to remote-control commands. Electrical faults can also prevent the compressor or fan motor from starting properly. Damaged capacitors, worn contactors, loose wiring and tripping circuit breakers all need professional air conditioning repair. Buzzing sounds, flashing error lights and burning smells should never be ignored.
Fan faults and installation problems can add another layer to the issue. The indoor fan pushes cooled air into the room, while the outdoor fan helps release heat. Rattling, squealing, very weak airflow or an unusually hot outdoor unit may point to a fan motor, bearing, blade or capacitor problem.
An incorrectly sized or poorly installed system may also struggle from the beginning. A unit with too little capacity may run for long periods in a large, sunny or heavily occupied space without reaching the selected temperature. Damaged piping, poor insulation, restricted outdoor airflow, drainage problems and unsuitable ducting can all reduce performance.
